I don`t want to go to school!
August 11th, 2008

A mom woke up her child on her second day of kindergarten. “It’s time to get ready for school”. The child stirred and proclaimed, “I did that yesterday."

If your child is becoming disenchanted with school or even refusing to go, what can you do? Here are some ideas from a variety of sources:

  • Try to find out why - sometimes it’s the noisy, overwhelming, bigness of the building or the classroom itself. It could be as simple as too tight shoes.
  • If it’s a physical complaint, check with your pediatrician. If everything’s OK, look for the root causes.
  • Does your child feel safe at school? Maintaining routines and adding an extra bit of TLC make it possible for children to enter new situations more easily.
  • Look for ways to reaffirm your child’s individuality. Each school has rules for a reason and being part of a group is intense. The more self-assured your child feels, the easier it is.
  • Relax. Your child takes his or her emotional clues from you.
