united way of greater chattanooga

June 20th, 2012

June 21 is the longest day of the year. More daylight hours than any other day. More time for volunteers to bring sun into someone's life. June 21 is a perfect day for United Ways across the country to show, by example, what it means to LIVE UNITED.

June 21 is when United Way of Greater Chattanooga will show its support for education, and we have been recruiting volunteers to raise their hand for education on this day by reading, mentoring or tutoring students in our area.

Volunteers do a lot when they read to, mentor or tutor a child. Not only do volunteers enrich a child's life (and theirs), but they are building a stronger and healthier community by keeping kids on the right track to success in school, and life.

This year will mark the fifth annual United Way Day of Action and the 125th Anniversary of the national United Way movement. Locally, this is United Way of Greater Chattanooga's 90th year of operations.

United Way and its volunteers will be out in force at the following locations, working to make a difference in kids' lives. However, volunteers are needed all year long. Go to iHelpChattanooga.org or call the Volunteer Center at 423-752-0316 to make a difference.

  • Character Fest (9:30am -2:30pm @ Camp Jordan Park) – Community volunteers along with volunteers from the East Ridge Kiwanis Club will help provide a positive experience for J.A. Henry YMCA Campers during Character Fest.  Just like an old fashion field day, but with activities that relate to character building, volunteers will man booths and lead activities. The event will take place at Camp Jordan located in East Ridge
  • Northside Horizons (1:00 pm-4:30pm @ Northside Neighborhood House) – Volunteers will be working with NNH kids (8th grade- 8-10 year olds). Volunteers will partner with one of the students and be interviewed for a future newspaper article. The students will also describe their favorite books and then group read with the volunteers.  This project will help students gain a stronger perspective of the external world. The event will take place at Northside Neighborhood House on Minor Street in North Chattanooga.
  • Collegedale Library Clean-Up (1:00pm-4:30pm at Collegedale Public Library)-  Volunteers will help kick off the beginning of summer for the library by helping to prepare for visitors with an old fashion cleanup day.  Volunteers will help clean bookshelves, organize books and clean throughout the building.  The Collegedale Library provides children’s programs that range from Toddler & Pre-School Story Time, Collegedale Kids Club to Family Film Days. The event will take place at Collegedale Public Library, 9318 Apison Pike in Collegedale.
  • Westside Story Circles (10:00am-12:00n at Westside Recreation Center)  Volunteers will lead children at Westside Youth Development Center in Story Circles, reading and discussing books with children and leading them in other learning activities. The Westside Youth Development program offers a safe and nurturing environment for youth to build lasting relationships and fond memories while receiving academic enrichment during the long days of summer.  Story Circles will take place on June 21 between 10a and 12n at Westside Recreation Center, 1201 Poplar Street, Chattanooga.
