united way of greater chattanooga

August 9th, 2012

United Way of Greater Chattanooga and the Chattanooga Market are bringing you the 4th annual LIVE UNITED DAY at the First Tennessee Pavilion on Sunday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

United Way invites everyone to help local public school teachers by donating school supplies for students in need. Last year, approximately $6,000 in school supplies was collected at the Market. All supplies and proceeds donated benefit the Hamilton County PTA's Teacher Supply Depot. This year's goal is to increase Market donations to $10,000 in supplies. This year's Stuff the Bus Drive ends October 31 and the collection goal for 2012 is $40,000 in supplies.

"The Hamilton County PTA is ecstatic about 'Stuffing the Bus' on Live Untied Day at the Market,  and it's so appreciative that United Way is donating all the school supplies collected to the Hamilton County PTA Teacher Supply Depot," said Scottie Summerlin, Hamilton County PTA Vice President. "School supplies are a real need in Hamilton County, considering 25% of Hamilton County public school students live at or below the poverty line. On average, public school teachers spend $1200 of their own money each year to help their students in need, and we all know public school teachers aren't paid nearly what they are worth," she added.

This will also be a great, kid-friendly event for the entire family. Approximately 14 United Way partners will have booths set up throughout the Market with children's games, arts, crafts and healthy activities for children and their families to enjoy. Parents can also sign their toddlers up for free books and learning check-ups. Every child who completes a learning check up at the market that day will receive a free family pass for six to the Creative Discovery Museum.

A few of the featured activities at the Market on August 21 will be face painting, drumming, temporary tattoos, arts & crafts, and other games (to name only a few activities) – all at no charge.  United Way will also have LIVE UNITED t-shirts on sale, and all proceeds go to benefit United Way and the impact work of its partner agencies. Of course, visitors can also enjoy Chattanooga Market's great vendors with food, produce and hand-made artesian goods.

Then there's the wonderful music - don't miss these performers:

  • 2 to 3 p.m. – The Vibe Dials

As always, admission to the Market is free and children’s activities provided by United Way and its partner agencies are at no extra charge. For more information on this event and United Way, call 423-752-0300 or visit www.LiveUnitedChattanooga.org.  For more information on the Chattanooga Market and its vendors, please visit www.ChattanoogaMarket.com
