United Way's 2-1-1 calls are up 50 percent compared to the same period in 2007. The highest number of calls are for help with rent, mortgage and utilities.

It's getting harder and harder for 2-1-1 to find agencies able to assist with rent and utilities in Hamilton and its surrounding counties in Tennessee, North Georgia and Alabama.

With the holidays approaching, there is also concern that basic needs of struggling families may not be met.
