What The Giving Tree –

United Way’s “Emergency” Holiday Help Program

When: Friday, December 18; Saturday, December 19; and

            Monday, December 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day

Why:    Most United Way agencies and local nonprofit organizations that provide holiday assistance stopped accepting requests for help by or before Dec. 11.

HOWEVER, United Way of Greater Chattanooga helps families in need who called after Dec. 12, thanks to the Giving Tree. This annual event is supported by United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council. It is hosted and coordinated by United Way’s Volunteer Center and Gifts in Kind.

How:   This event allows families who have received no holiday help through other assistance programs to "shop" at Gifts In Kind for gifts. Last year, the Corporate Volunteer Council and Gifts in Kind provided holiday gifts for approximately 60 families through this event - that's a 50% increase over the previous year.

Every child selects one gift for each parent; parents choose two gifts for each child. Families who come to shop also get a goody bag that includes: a free family-pass to Creative Discovery Museum and the Chattanooga Zoo, Little Debbie snacks, care products from Chattem and books from United Way’s Project Ready for School.
